Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
Race, gender, and class-based inequity are innate to our country’s systems and structures. These inequities are the reason we do the work we do. Traditionally, post-secondary education and training have been reserved for women with certain privileges (like having childcare, transportation, free time, etc.). Equity should be accessible to all women, regardless of barriers. We define equity as recognizing the unique needs of each individual and offering differentiated support to ensure that everyone has access to the same opportunities; removing the predictability of success or failure that is correlated with any financial, social, or cultural factor used to marginalize or oppress individuals or groups. It is the differences and similarities of our students, staff, and partners that make us strong and unique. Our organization actively creates, recognizes, celebrates, and values its diversity.
We believe inclusion means creating a community where EVERYONE feels supported and welcomed, with particular care for those who have been traditionally marginalized, such as people of color, LGBTQIA+, and those from low-income backgrounds. At West Virginia Women Work we do not tolerate discrimination based on identity for any reason. We strive to be more than just words. We know that each of us brings varied experiences and knowledge. We don’t expect perfection, but we hold ourselves and others accountable to deepen our understanding and our commitment to making a change. This is consistent with our mission of supporting and advocating for education, employment, and economic equity of ALL women.
