Apprenticeships in West Virginia

Boilermakers 667

Boilermakers 667 has a three-year apprenticeship program that teaches skills in a variety of welding areas.  Their program is located in Winfield, WV, and covers most of the state. Boilermaker work demands a high degree of technical skill and knowledge, a dedication to excellence, a willingness to study and complete on-the-job training, and an ability to travel from job site to job site to maintain employment. Bricklayers District Council Apprenticeship Program

The WV Bricklayers District Council Apprenticeship program provides apprenticeship opportunities for those who reside in any West Virginia County as well as the Counties of Allegheny, Garrett, and Washington, MD.

When to apply: The 3rd Friday of each month

Where to apply: Any WV Job Service or Western Maryland One Stop Job Center

Hours to apply: 8:00 am-12:00 noon and 1:00 pm-4:00 pm

Bricklayers minimum qualifications for application to the Apprenticeship program require that applicants be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or a G.E.D, and a valid driver’s license.  Applicants must be a resident of West Virginia, Allegheny, Garrett, or Washington Counties in Maryland. Applicants must be physically able to perform the work of the trade.A drug test will be required.  All applicants will be administered a standard written aptitude test by the WV Job Service or the Western Maryland One Stop Job Center.  In order to be accepted, you must provide copies of your birth certificate, high school diploma, or G.E.D. and a copy of your driver’s license will be requested at a later date. Carpentry

Carpentry is a vast trade and the skills our members provide begin with our extensive training programs. The Apprenticeship Program offers a four-year program in the area of carpentry — commercial, residential and heavy construction. Additionally, separate specialized programs exist for floor laying, cabinet making, and mill working. You can also become a pile driver or a millwright. In the program, safety and professional skills are emphasized.  Interested applicants must pass certain testing requirements before acceptance into the program. CEMENT MASONS 926

Cement Masons are skilled in their crafts as well as in working to bring in the job on time and within budget.  Once an apprentice earns his journeyman status, his skill becomes an asset.  This asset is most needed and is recognized by all union contractors.  Cement Mason journeymen are considered to be on the “upper end” of the construction industry wage and benefits scale. An Apprentice is required to complete 160 hours of classroom education and 1200 hours of on-the-job training each year to advance to the next level of apprenticeship. INSULATORS

The work of the Insulator/Asbestos Worker includes the insulation of both industrial and commercial mechanical systems (i.e. piping, boilers, ductwork, storage tanks, and equipment) for the purpose of energy savings; burn protection, and controlling system heat transfer and condensation.  The majority of work takes place in industrial (power plants, chemical process plants, refineries, steel mills, etc…) and commercial (schools, hospitals, offices, etc…) settings.

Laborers

Unlike most other construction trade apprenticeship programs, the Construction Craft Laborers’ (CCL) program is designed to provide apprentices with 160 hours of training before they ever set foot on a job site. To become eligible for employment and on-the-job training, the apprentice must complete the program’s initial classroom and hands-on training session. It is during this initial session that the apprentice receives training in basic construction skills, safety awareness, and work ethics. For more info:

Millwrights

Millwrights are an elite group of construction workers who work primarily in metal and with machinery and equipment requiring precision. Millwrights install conveyor systems, escalators, giant electrical turbines, and generators. They install and do maintenance on machinery in factories and do much of the precision work in nuclear power plants.

Operating Engineers
IUOE Local 132 Joint Apprenticeship Training School

The length of Apprenticeship is three (3) years.  Five weeks of training are required each year at the Training Site. 1,000 OJT hours are required each year to be advanced to the next year.  Apprentices must be able to travel and be available to work throughout the state of West Virginia.  Apprentices are not paid during training weeks or when they are on job layoff.  they are only paid when working on the job.
