Discover the World of Advanced Manufacturing: A Conversation with Stacie Boggess

Step Up for Women Advanced Manufacturing student participating in the ACE bootcamp competition.

At West Virginia Women Work, we’re proud of our Advanced Manufacturing Pre-Apprenticeship Program. To give potential students a closer look at what this 10-week journey entails, I sat down with Stacie Boggess, our program coordinator, to discuss what students can expect, the unique opportunities provided, and the life-changing skills they’ll gain. Here’s an inside look at what awaits you.

A Day in the Life of a Student

When I asked Stacie about what a typical day looks like, she explained that students split their time between classroom learning and hands-on shop work. “Half of the day is spent doing bookwork and measurements,” she said, “and the other half is spent on machines completing projects.” Some days, students are lucky enough to spend the entire day on the machines, but near the end of the program, their focus shifts to preparing for their NIMS certifications with intensive classroom study.

The program is carefully designed to balance hands-on experience with the foundational knowledge students need to succeed in the manufacturing industry.

Certifications: Building a Strong Foundation for Success

Certifications are a cornerstone of the Step Up for Women Advanced Manufacturing program, equipping students with essential credentials to stand out in the workforce. As Program Coordinator Stacie Boggess explains, “You can’t build a house without first having a great foundation.” Certifications like OSHA 10 teach students how to stay safe while also giving them an edge when applying for entry-level positions or roles in safety-related fields. Forklift training offers hands-on experience with the equipment, while First Aid/CPR training prepares students for emergency situations—a standard requirement in many workplaces.

For employers, hiring someone who already possesses these certifications is a significant benefit. It saves companies time and money on training, while also making our graduates competitive candidates in the hiring process. These certifications provide a solid foundation for students as they begin their careers in manufacturing or related fields.

Gearing Up for NIMS Certification

Stacie highlighted the comprehensive training students receive to earn their NIMS certifications. This includes working through textbooks, completing workbook exercises, and practicing with tools and machines.

“They’ll learn to operate CNC mills, CNC lathes, and use tools like calipers, T-gauges, micrometers, and more,” Stacie shared. “It all has to happen together to pass the NIMS exams.” This integrated approach ensures students are fully prepared for the technical demands of the industry.

ACE BootCamp: A Test of Skill and Teamwork

The ACE BootCamp is one of the highlights of the program, offering students a taste of real-world challenges. During the BootCamp, students use Fusion360 to program projects, run machines to create parts, and assemble a piston engine in a competitive setting.

“The competition teaches problem-solving and perseverance,” Stacie explained. “They have to figure out the right tension for the engine to work and overcome frustration when it doesn’t work the first time.” She proudly shared that in the last BootCamp, the women from her program outperformed the academic class in the competition.

Building Confidence Through Soft Skills

While technical skills are vital, soft skills training is equally important. Stacie emphasized that these sessions are about more than just professional development; they’re about personal growth.

“We work on overcoming barriers, understanding oneself, and learning how to represent yourself effectively,” she said. “It is so important to put as much effort into these days as one does the workshop days. A student could have excellent skills but might miss out on that dream opportunity if they are unable to ace an interview or present themselves well. It’s also a time when we discuss perspectives that might be holding them back from achieving what they want in life.”

Stacie also noted how much fun students have during these days, particularly when acting out “what not to do” professional communication scenarios. “It’s a mix of serious learning and lighthearted engagement,” she said.

Preparing for the Workforce

The program also focuses on preparing students for entry-level positions or further training opportunities. Job shadowing allows students to gain a real-world perspective of their potential roles, while the comprehensive soft skills training ensures they are ready to find, secure, and excel in their desired jobs.

Additionally, the Advanced Manufacturing Pre-Apprenticeship program offers students the chance to earn credit toward an associate degree through Marshall at BridgeValley. This means that graduates not only leave with valuable certifications but are also one step closer to furthering their education if they choose to continue.

Stacie encourages students to trust themselves and stay focused on their goals. “You aren’t going to go into a position at entry level making $42.00 an hour, but with experience and tenacity, you can certainly get there,” she says.

Uncovering Potential and Success Stories

For Stacie, the most rewarding part of the program is watching students discover their capabilities.

“When a student makes something on a machine or passes a NIMS exam, their pride is contagious,” she said. “I’m just so proud to be part of their journey.”

She shared a touching story about a former student who graduated despite personal struggles. “She was quiet but incredibly skilled. At graduation, she told me how proud her late mother would have been. She’s now pursuing an associate’s degree in machining and thriving in a paid internship.”

“One of the program’s proudest moments came from a single mom who excelled during her cohort. She not only earned the NIMS CNC Operator Certification but also achieved the NIMS Measurements, Materials, and Safety Certification. Before graduating, she received two job offers, ensuring a stable and supportive environment for her child. That kiddo is going to have a stable home environment because his mom rocks!” Stacie says. “I also believe with hard work, any woman can accomplish this. You get out of it what you put into it.”

Why Now Is the Time to Join

With the manufacturing industry booming, there’s no better time to enter the field. “There are thousands of manufacturing jobs in our area,” Stacie said. “Companies are actively working to diversify their staff, which gives women an edge.”

For those with no prior experience, Stacie reassured, “Starting fresh is an advantage. It’s easier to teach good habits than to un-teach bad ones. No experience is needed to succeed here.”

Partnership with Marshall Advanced Manufacturing Center

The partnership with Marshall Advanced Manufacturing Center enhances the program significantly. “Our trainers are incredible,” Stacie said. “Their backgrounds and expertise ensure students get a top-notch education, and their patience and support make all the difference.”

Students graduate ready to pursue careers as CNC machinists, quality control specialists, line operators, welders, and more. The possibilities span industries like aviation, automotive, and medical supplies—the opportunities are endless.

Take the First Step Toward Your Future

“You don’t know until you try,” Stacie encouraged. “Step outside your comfort zone. This program could be the key to a high-paying career and a brighter future.”

Classes begin February 17, 2025, in Dunbar/Charleston, WV. If you’re ready to take the first step, don’t wait—spots are limited! Apply now to join this transformative journey.
