Building Confidence, Breaking Barriers: How Women Are Reshaping the Construction Industry

Deidra Simpson

The construction industry is evolving, and women are at the forefront of this transformation. At West Virginia Women Work’s Step Up for Women Construction Pre-Apprenticeship Program, we witness inspiring stories every day—stories of resilience, determination, and growth. One of those stories belongs to Deidra Simpson, a recent graduate who is now leading the way as the Training Coordinator for our Dunbar class.

From Crafting to Construction: Deidra’s Journey

Before joining Step Up for Women Construction, Deidra Simpson had a diverse career background. Armed with a bachelor’s degree in technical applied studies and an associate’s in business management, she worked in various roles, including as a travel agent. But when the pandemic hit in 2020, Deidra faced job loss, which turned into an unexpected blessing.

“I got to spend more time with my kids who have been my focus for the last four years,” Deidra shared. During this period, she explored side jobs and focused on her craft business, but the desire for something more sustainable kept nagging at her.

When she discovered the Step Up for Women Construction program, she spent months wondering if she could handle the physical and mental challenges it posed. “Could I do the physical work? Was I going to find myself out of my league?” she asked herself. But, determined to step out of her comfort zone, Deidra decided to enroll—and it changed her life.

Transforming Challenges into Opportunities

Deidra’s time in the program was filled with memorable moments. One standout project was renovating the floors of the training center. Working with a classmate, Deidra took on the challenge of redoing floors in the conference room and office.

“That was a lot of effort, but thankfully we worked well together,” she said. “We accomplished all that work in about three days.”

What made the experience even more meaningful was the teamwork. “The best part was how we all came together as a team to accomplish so much work in this building,” Deidra reflected. “I like knowing the students after us will benefit from all the work we did.”

Breaking Barriers and Giving Back

Deidra didn’t stop at graduating. Her passion for construction and empowering others led her to accept the role of Training Coordinator. “I am absolutely elated to join the team,” she said. “It is an honor to give back to the community and help other women find their path to a new career in the trades.”

Deidra’s story exemplifies the ripple effect of Step Up for Women Construction. Her experience not only shaped her own career but also positioned her to mentor and inspire others.
