A Registered Apprenticeship Program(RAP) allows a worker to earn wages while learning and doing industry-relevant productive work. They are given a career path in a high-demand field like the skilled trades while earning portable, nationally-recognized credentials under the supervision of an experienced mentor. The worker’s wages increase as their skills increase.
There are three types of Registered Apprenticeships.
Time-based
Progress is measured by the number of hours spent on the job and in the classroom.
Competency-based
Progress is measured by demonstration of knowledge, relevant skills, and abilities.
Hybrid-based
Progress is measured through a combination of both Time-based and Competency-based programs. There will be a required amount of hours and demonstration of skills.
Registered Apprenticeship Programs are held by trade associations, labor organizations, employers, or an independent apprenticeship organization. They are registered with the U.S. Department Of Labor(DOL). This ensures they are providing a quality program that meets national standards. The length of the apprenticeship will vary depending on the industry and type of program. The average starting salary of someone who has completed a Registered Apprenticeship Program is $72,000 a year.
Attending a RAP is a great alternative to an expensive college degree. Plus, you can often get academic credit for the skills you have learned during your time in the Registered Apprenticeship Program that transfers towards a degree if you decide to go that route. The cost of getting the degree will be much less and you will have been paid while learning the skills that you received credit for.
