When most people think about job training, they picture learning how to use tools, machines, or specific computer programs. But there’s another kind of training that can be just as important—sometimes even more so. It’s called soft skills training, and employers everywhere are looking for it.
At West Virginia Women Work, we see the difference soft skills make every day. That’s why we created SkillUp, a short-term program sponsored by Comcast that helps individuals improve the skills employers want most, without committing to a full-time training program or trade track. So, what exactly are soft skills, and why are they such a big deal?
What Are Soft Skills?
Soft skills are the personal qualities, habits, and communication styles that make someone a reliable and effective worker. They aren’t tied to a specific trade or job—they’re useful in every career and every workplace.
Here are a few examples of soft skills:
- Communication – Knowing how to speak clearly, listen well, and ask the right questions
- Teamwork – Working respectfully with others and contributing to group success
- Time Management – Showing up on time, staying organized, and meeting deadlines
- Problem Solving – Finding solutions when things go wrong
- Professionalism – Acting appropriately in a work setting, including how you dress, talk, and follow rules
- Adaptability – Being able to adjust when plans change or unexpected challenges come up
These might sound simple, but they’re powerful. Employers consistently say that finding someone who shows up, communicates clearly, and works well with others is more valuable than someone with technical skills alone.
Why Do Employers Care About Soft Skills So Much?
Because no matter how good someone is with tools, tech, or machines, if they can’t communicate, show up on time, or solve problems, the whole team suffers.
In job interviews, soft skills often determine who gets hired. On the job, they determine who gets promoted or let go.
Employers want team members they can rely on. They want people who don’t just do the work, but also:
- Build strong relationships with coworkers
- Understand instructions the first time
- Handle feedback well
- Represent the company professionally
Soft skills are what make someone a great hire—and a great coworker. They can also make or break someone’s long-term success in any career field.
How SkillUp Teaches Soft Skills in a Practical Way
Our SkillUp program, sponsored by Comcast, is designed specifically for individuals who want to improve their job readiness but don’t have time for a longer training program or aren’t interested in the skilled trades.
We cover soft skills in a way that’s practical, supportive, and real-world focused. That means:
- Practicing mock interviews so participants know what to say—and what not to say
- Writing and improving resumes that highlight strengths
- Learning how to communicate professionally by text, phone, email, and in person
- Understanding workplace expectations like punctuality, teamwork, and communication
- Building confidence to speak up, ask questions, and problem solve on the job
Each session is designed to be interactive and welcoming. We meet people where they are and help them build the skills to move forward—whether they’re starting over, re-entering the workforce, or looking for a better job.
Who Should Consider Soft Skills Training?
- People who haven’t worked in a while
- Anyone who wants to feel more confident at work
- Individuals who are switching careers or applying for jobs in a new industry
If you’ve ever wondered why your resume isn’t getting callbacks—or why you’re not getting promoted—soft skills training could be the missing link.
