West Virginia Women Work Selected for GitLab Foundation’s Powering Economic Opportunity Fund

West Virginia Women Work (WVWW) is proud to announce its selection as one of ten organizations nationwide awarded funding through the GitLab Foundation’s inaugural Powering Economic Opportunity Fund.

This national initiative supports nonprofits helping low-wage workers access quality, future-ready careers in fields such as renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, and the skilled trades. The funding will enable WVWW to expand its pre-apprenticeship training, virtual career exploration, and reentry support efforts across West Virginia.

“This investment comes at a critical time,” said Heather Shockney, Chief Operations Officer at WVWW. “We’re seeing strong demand from employers and real interest from individuals who want to work with their hands and build something meaningful. This support helps us meet those needs, while removing barriers that keep too many people out of good-paying careers.”

WVWW’s project will offer practical, hands-on training and mentorship for unemployed and underemployed West Virginians, including those impacted by the justice system. Participants will gain exposure to in-demand trades, earn industry-recognized credentials, and receive the tools and guidance they need to access long-term career opportunities.

The organization’s work has long focused on workforce development in high-demand sectors, and this grant marks a significant step forward in expanding its reach and impact. Through a combination of in-person training, virtual bootcamps, and supportive services, WVWW will continue building strong foundations for individuals—and for West Virginia’s economy.
