Showing Up Strong: Mental Resilience Matters on the Job

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and while we don’t always talk about it in big ways, we know it matters, especially when you’re trying to build a new career or get back on your feet.

At West Virginia Women Work, we’ve seen that it takes more than just technical skills to succeed. It takes grit, follow-through, and the ability to keep going even when life gets hard. That’s mental strength—and it shows up in a lot of small ways that make a big difference.

Some days, it’s showing up on time when you didn’t sleep the night before.
Some days, it’s rewriting your resume, even though it’s the last thing you want to do.
Some days, it’s just keeping your head up and remembering why you started.

Mental health doesn’t have to be a big conversation. Sometimes it’s just checking in with yourself, asking for help when you need it, and learning how to manage stress so you don’t burn out before you even get started.

We don’t expect anyone to be perfect, but we do believe in showing up, working hard, and taking care of yourself along the way. That’s what we try to teach in every one of our programs.

So, as Mental Health Awareness Month wraps up, we just want to say: we see your effort. We’re proud of your progress. And if you’re working toward something better, you’re not alone.
