Programs & Pathways

West Virginia Women Work operates several programs designed around one reality: not everyone starts in the same place, and not everyone can access training the same way. Whether someone needs hands-on instruction, flexible virtual learning, or a structured path out of recovery or reentry — there is a program built for where they are.

IN-PERSON

Step Up Construction

A free, 12-week pre-apprenticeship program delivering hands-on training in carpentry, electrical, & plumbing. Participants earn industry-recognized certifications, including OSHA 10, forklift, and First Aid/CPR. Many receive job offers before graduation. No experience needed.

Best for: Anyone ready to enter the trades — no experience required.

FLEXIBLE-ENTRY

Second Shift

A flexible on-ramp to skilled trades careers for rural communities, youth ages 16–24, and justice-impacted individuals. Bootcamps, virtual training, and reentry pathways all lead toward apprenticeship or employment. No matter where someone is starting, Second Shift meets them there.

Best for: Anyone who needs a flexible, low-barrier way to explore skilled trades careers.

RECOVERY TO CAREER

Step Up Recovery

Delivered in partnership with recovery and reentry organizations across West Virginia. Combines career readiness training, virtual trades exploration, and hands-on credentials. Creates a clear, supported pathway from recovery to stable, long-term employment — because a good job is one of the strongest foundations for lasting recovery.

Best for: Individuals in recovery who are ready to take the next step toward a career.

VIRTUAL / ON-DEMAND

SkillUp Virtual Platform

30+ on-demand courses delivering microcredentials in AI and digital skills, tech career pathways, career readiness, workplace skills, and financial foundations. Accessible statewide on any device, at any pace. Integrated across all WVWW programs so participants build skills no matter which pathway they’re on.

Best for: Anyone building job-ready skills on their own schedule, from anywhere.

VIRTUAL TRADES

Virtual Trades Training

Immersive simulations in electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and heavy equipment operation delivered virtually through our partner Interplay. Brings hands-on trades training directly to participants in rural communities who can’t access in-person programs. A powerful first step toward a skilled trades career from anywhere in the state.

Best for: Rural participants ready to explore trades careers without leaving their community.

CAREER SUPPORT

PartnerUp Mentoring

Individualized career coaching, resume support, interview preparation, and job placement assistance available across all WVWW programs. Helps participants navigate the job search and land roles that match their new skills and credentials. Because getting hired is just the beginning — we stay with participants as they build their careers.

Best for: Participants at any stage who need ongoing support to get hired, stay hired, and advance.
